INPHEDIA.ID - Mount Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and a tourist destination in the central part of Java, with a peak height of more than 2 thousand meters above sea level. Since 2004, the forest area around its peak has been the Mount Merapi National Park.

Administratively, the southern slope is in the Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, and the rest is in the Central Java Province, namely Magelang Regency on the west side, Boyolali Regency on the north and east sides, and Klaten Regency on the southeast side.

The name "Merapi" comes from the abbreviations "meru" (mountain) and "fire", so the name "Merapi" actually already means "volcano". The current mountain is the youngest mountain in a series of volcanoes that lead south from Mount Ungaran, Mount Merbabu, and Mount Merapi.

Merapi is one of the world's sixteen volcanoes included in the Decade Volcanoes project. This mountain is classified as dangerous because according to modern records erupts every two to five years.

Nevertheless, Mount Merapi is still visited by many tourists. If the hiking trail is not closed because of the eruption of Mount Merapi, in addition to climbing on foot, you can also rent a Jeep to explore the Merapi Mountain.
